Background of the Study
Alcohol and drug abuse among youth is a growing public health concern with far-reaching consequences for physical, mental, and social well-being. In Uhunmwonde Local Government Area, Edo State, the prevalence of substance abuse has escalated, leading to a spectrum of health challenges including addiction, mental health disorders, and increased risk of accidents and injuries (Eze, 2023). Contributory factors include socio-cultural influences, peer pressure, and economic stressors, which collectively foster an environment conducive to substance abuse (Ogun, 2024). This study examines both the direct health impacts and the broader social consequences of alcohol and drug abuse among youth. It aims to integrate quantitative data on prevalence with qualitative insights from affected individuals and community stakeholders to understand the multifaceted impact on youth health (Okoro, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
In Uhunmwonde, the escalating incidence of alcohol and drug abuse among youth has become a significant public health challenge (Balogun, 2023). Substance abuse is linked to adverse physical and mental health outcomes, including addiction, behavioral issues, and increased risk of injuries. Despite existing intervention programs, the prevalence remains high, highlighting gaps in prevention and rehabilitation efforts. This study seeks to identify the underlying factors contributing to substance abuse and assess its impact on youth health, providing evidence to inform more effective intervention strategies (Ibrahim, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

To assess the prevalence of alcohol and drug abuse among youth.

To evaluate the health impacts of substance abuse on the youth population.

To recommend effective prevention and intervention strategies.

Research Questions:

What is the prevalence of substance abuse among youth in Uhunmwonde?

How does substance abuse affect the physical and mental health of young individuals?

What strategies can reduce the incidence and impact of alcohol and drug abuse?

Research Hypotheses:

Youth engaging in substance abuse exhibit poorer health outcomes.

Peer influence and socio-economic factors significantly contribute to substance abuse.

Comprehensive intervention programs will reduce substance abuse and improve youth health.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it addresses the critical issue of substance abuse and its detrimental effects on youth health. The findings will aid in developing targeted intervention strategies and policy measures to combat substance abuse, ultimately promoting healthier lifestyles among young people in Uhunmwonde (Olu, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of Terms:

Substance abuse: The excessive use of alcohol and drugs that leads to health and social problems.

Youth: Individuals typically aged between 15 and 24 years.

Intervention strategies: Programs and policies designed to prevent or reduce substance abuse.
